THE ROYAL FAMILY UNIT-4

The Steam Machine.

We´re going to talk you, reader about the invention that have changed our world: The steam machine.

Its history.

James Watt
We know that the initial patent owned to Thomas Savery in 1698, that was a document in where there wasn´t any practical information. It was a steam water pump called Miner´s friend. Later, in 1712, Thomas Newcomen developed a better design of a steam machine based in Savery´s idea, but the machine we know was developed by James Watt, or that is what we have been told. Now, we are going to tell you all the truly history of the steam machine.
Thomas Newcomen
The first record we have comes from the Egyptian civilization in a scripture of Heron of Alejandria named Spiritalia seu Pneumatic. There, it is described a baby steam machine that will have to be developed through the pass of the time to become the one we know nowadays.
It is also said that in 1543 Blasco de Garay, a Spanish marine officer, tried to boost a ship with a steam machine there is no data of the motor, but on Simancas archive it is described that event.
In 1601 Giovanni Battista della Porta describes a machine to boost water through fire similar to Heron´s one. Some years later, in 1606, Jerónimo de Ayanz y Beaumont registered the first patent of a steam machine that has been used successfully.
But all of this were no more than antecessors. the current one we know was invented by Edward Somerset on 1663. It was developed with the purpose of raising water yo the upper floors of the Rawlan´s Casttle. However, he can´t afford producing and selling his machines, and he died on poverty. This is probably the fact that makes the invention attributed to Thomas Savery which was later improved by James Watt.
Now it is time recognized Somerset invention and never again outshine his name. He was the Truly inventor of the steam machine.

How does it work.

For you all who don´t know much about it, the steam machine is an appliance that burns coal to break free the thermal energy that it contains.
In a boiler a certain amount of water is seethed incessantly. After being heated by various fuels such as wood, coal or oil, it boils. When it is boiling, the steam generated is concentrated by making a high pressure and in that state, it is directed to a closed chamber. The steam from the boiler enters into the chamber, where there is a cylinder, which, by expanding the volume of the water, pushes a piston that generates a movement of translation or rotation.

The basic parts of the steam engine in a locomotive would be a boiler, slide valve, cylinder, steam reservoir, piston and a drive wheel.

  1. I think the information is well written and it makes easier to understand the way the steam engine works. The part of history and evolution of the machine is much cooler than writting a whole paragraph giving technical info, so that is a good point. The links to contents are quite good in my opinion because they are not from wikipedia but from legit sources. I love the gif of the machine because it ilustrate perfectly its performance.

  2. Hi guys! To be honest, I thought your article to be very boring because of the topic, but I have found it awesome! The history of the steam engine is very interesting, because most of us thought that the steam engine's inventor was James Watt and we did not know anything about the rest men, whose links are so useful, but some of them did not have a link with their biography and that was a small mistake. The explanation about how does it work is quite good because is clear and short, and the inclusion of photos and the video too.

  3. The idea of the new is really interesting but there was too much imformation about the history and enough of how the machine worked,in the next new you should introduce more imformation of other things and not only about the history.

  4. A very specific new that gives very detailed information abaut the process that led to the creation of this mechanism that totally transformed the world. It can be heavy to read sometimes because it has too much information. The video is good and explains the process quite well. Congrats!

  5. I believe that it is a very good article, full of curiosities and interesting facts like Somerset who was the real creator of the steam engine. Also I had never heard about Blasco de Garay, even if it is not proven that he tried to boost a ship with a steam engine, it could be true. The part of how the steam engine works is quite good and the gif is very useful to understand the process. I like how you organized the article and the paper version, too.

  8. Of this news, I think that it is really complete and well-writen, so it makes easy to understand the information you have explain. There are lots of links, and I like that because it helps you to extend the information of the steam machine because I didn´t know so much about it. I also liked that you have put curiosities about this, and makes the news more interesting. You have explained the function of the steam machine in detail but not so long, so it isn´t bored to read it (in addition to the video.) About the paper version , I would also like to read the information about the performance, not only about the history; but it is a good job, well done!

  11. I think your news is very well written and explains perfectly how does the steam machine works. It seemed to be a boring article, but it isn't because it tells lots of things about its history and I'm sure that most of us didn't know almost anything about it. The links are also very good although some of them were in Spanish. To be honest, I don't like the paper version and it isn't attractive to my view, but I appreciate your work. The images and the video are nice and support perfectly the explanation. Good job!

  12. I think it´s a interesting news. The content is well ordered chronologically although it gives so many names that it is a bit boring. Despite this, what I liked the most is the final part and the video explaining the operation of the steam machine, which is clear and concise. Regarding the paper format I don´t like its distribution.

  14. Hi, I think that the history is interesting and it´s well written, but perhaps it´s too extensive and with a lot of information to assimilate in a single article, mading the new a bit boring. Maybe, the topic isn´t the best either. Anyway, I like the images and the links and the paper versión is also good, but it will be better with more images.
